The incident depicted in the two following sketches was actually seen through a telescope from Caesar's Camp. A Boer, of apparently some high position, rode up to the emplacement of the 6-inch gun on Bulwana. He was received with tokens of respect, and after pointing at the town, sat to watch the result of the shot.

The explosion of a 6-inch gun was too much for his pony, who whipped round and deposited his Excellency on the ground to the consternation of the gun's crew.

Chevril

A Chevril factory was started by Colonel Ward during the last weeks of the siege, by means of which the emaciated troop horse was issued in a disguised and more palatable form to the troops and inhabitants of the town. Chevril, Chevril paste, sausage meat and even calves; foot jelly were all turned out from the same raw material.
