Lord Roberts unveiling a statue of Lord Roberts at the Crystal Palace

The Jubilee year of the Crystal Palace is being celebrated by the holding of a Naval and Military Exhibition which was opened by Lord Roberts last week. The opportunity was taken to ask Lady Roberts to unveil a statue of the Commander in Chief.. The statue, which is of bronze, is the work of the late Mr Harry Bates.

The regimental colour presented to the 3rd Scots Guards is of English-made silk, embroidered in colours both sides alike, and has as its distinguishing features the new Tudor Crown, which will shortly be a familiar object on the coinage. The Collar of the Order of the Garter, with pendant George encircling the Arms of the late Prince Consort; also the regimental badge of the Sphinx, with laurel wreath and scrolls of regimental honours. The whole is manufactured by Messrs Hobson and Sons, of Lexington Street, W. In all the Guards regiments the regimental Colour us the Union, whereas in line regiments the Union is always the King's Colour.

Captioned: The army manoeuvres on Salisbury Plain: A stiff job for the gunners.

They were to face much stiffer challenges in South Africa only a few weeks later
