Hi David

The medal is named to J.L. MASSON, ESQ. SURVEYOR GENERAL

I have copious notes on the chap including a photograph which I will post once I have done the write-up.

Regards

Rory

Then there's his two brothers.... Henrique Charles who had his late rush of blood with Murray's Horse and Captain Walter Scott - following on the family tradition in the Natal Carbineers.
Capt George J P Shepstone, who had a heroic death at Isandhlwana, had two sons, George and Martin, who both also served in the Natal Carbineers under their Uncle Walter.
The 1820 settlers' bloodlines ran long and deep throughout the 19th century history of Southern Africa
