S.S. Kanzler

German East Africa Line

The ship that conveyed the personnel of the Russo-Dutch Hospital from Amsterdam (and Naples) to Lourenco Marques. The Dutch contingent left Amsterdam on 23 Dec 1899 and entered Delagoa Bay on 3 Feb 1900.

Sophia Izedinova (1903 & 1977), p. 13

"[At Lourenco Marques] we remained aboard the Kanzler, while formalities with the Portuguese authorities and also the Dutch and Russian consulates were being completed. For us members of an ambulance sent by one of the great European powers and protected by the international Red Cross, these formalities were soon got through. But private persons lacking official support and suspected, not without reason, of being volunteers, were confronted by the Portuguese in deference to the British with unexpected and trivial obstacles. One of these was the demand for payments on various pretexts, some more convincing than others. We sisters, of course, were spared all this bother and after three days we were ready to embark upon the final stage of our long journey".

Cape Times Weekly Edition, 18 Oct 99

Labelled as Coldstreamers, embarkation at Southampton.

This must be the 2nd Battalion which sailed on the Gascon and arrived at the Cape about 12th November 1899.
