Hi Forumites, my first venture to this forum, I see many friends from the BMF here..

I have a family medal to Guide P A H Gethin, FID, single clasp R o M. He does not appear in the name search, but can be found on WO100/301 as a confirmed single clasp.

Welcome to this forum, any Relief of Mafeking is rare as a single clasp and your medal is very rare indeed, look after it!

Welcome to a new area of collecting! The single RoM is particularly rare.

I wonder if he was with the Barkley West column, or that from the North West? The FID isn't listed as a typical unit to have the single bar, but being an Agent who knows what he could have been doing, maybe operating alone and moving between the town and the columns?

Are there any papers besides the rolls for him?

The Buxton FID book has "Guide C.A.H. GETHIN" entitled to single clasp RofM and on the roll of the Intelligence Dept., Mafeking and Western District and Kimberley. He further shows 21 RofM clasps to the FID; only two, however, single RofM clasps. Since he apparently has no further service, I would suggest that he was a local chap with useful local knowledge.
