I was looking at a QSA that is for sale on our favourite auction site and noted it was named to Civln: A. MACFARLANE.

It struck me that I didn't recall seeing a medal so named. I have seen Mr and no title in the past.

Would this medal have been awarded to a civilian attached to a military unit such as the ASC?

This just hammered at £337 - the most expensive civilian QSA?

He has an entry on the FID roll saying he was recommended for the medal for "his services in connection with the personal safety" Roberts & Kitchener.

Very nice - but whay exactly did he do and who was he, a policeman in Jo'burg?

I can't find anything useful on NAAIRS. Any ideas?

Hi Meurig

I was not even near being the underbidder on this one!

According to the 1908 "Who's Who" he was an Outfitter and Draper and "assisted Military Police Authorities from June 7, 1900 to Aug 1903 in confidential capacity; Queen's Medal (civilian)"

It would have fitted nicely in my Boer War Scout/Intelligence sub-collection.

Morning Henk

And I was further down the queue!

I think without further knowledge this remains an expensive medal.

I have a QSA,KSA (self award) to GL Vincent RPR. The rolls indicate he joined Jo'burg CID in 1901 - this was set up by ER Henry ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ER_Henry ) - famous for developing fingerprinting. I have letters of Vincent's in which he claims to be "detective to Lord Milner".

Like MacFarlane was he one of many or a close aide?
