gfp,

Do you have a date for the incident please?

Do you have the names of those killed? Are there any dates on their graves?

In the British Newspapers of early February 1902 there are numerous short reports of an armoured train collision near Burghersdorp. This is the first one I have found with the names of those killed & injured listed.

It is from the Morning Leader of 4 February 1902. Based on some of the others I am not totally convinced 31 Jan is correct. Will do some more checking.

URGENT EDIT - The Morning Leader did get the date right but, more importantly, they incorrectly named three of those killed - for Cooper read Coops, for Hotcher read Hother and for Farrier read Farrell. Presumbaly this means they may also have misnamed some of the injured.

A name search for 1565 Cooper on this site produced a nil return but 8457 Gallagher produced the goods and shows the Morning Leader did get the date correct.

Found on Find a Grave for Burgersdorp Old Cemetery where it was posted by Peter H

Peter also added: "8457 Sapper W A Gallagher, Cheshire Royal Engineer Volunteers. Killed aged 22 years in a collision of 2 armoured trains near Stormberg. He is also commemorated on the Royal Engineers South African Memorial Arch in Brompton Barracks, Gillingham, Kent, England."

To learn more about the 5 killed and view their death certificates visit:

Also other victims of the South African (Boer) War of 1899-1902 including some Boers, two of whom were killed at the Battle of Stormberg. This is all the work of "Peter H".
