I am researching a soldier, 3538 Pte Sydney Simmons of the Northumberland Fusiliers who has a DCM (EVIIR) for the Boer War. The seller claimed that his award appeared in the London Gazette of 1 April 1902 but I can find no trace of it.

Can anyone more competent than I please help track his LG entry down - I am trying to establish for which action etc. he was awarded the DCM.

Regards

Rory

Ah, the Northumberland Fusiliers! One of my favourite Regiments.
According to Abbott, 3535 Pte S. Simmons (Symons) of the NF; LG31/10/1902, Army Order 10/03.

A splendid group! A quick read of Stirling leads me to suspect that the DCM may have had something to do with the stand of the NF and a few others on 6-7 March 1902.

I think he was also MID (LG July, 29 1902) in Kitchener's Dispatch.

I am still trying to find the 31 October LG entry but will persevere.

He is named (as Pte S. Symons of the NF along with a number of his fellows) in Lord Kitchener's final despatch of 23/6/1902.
