Hello
I am trying to find Newspapers which would have covered the Dudley area for the Boer War period
I am looking for newspaper obituaries or casualty references for a soldier who is commemorated on the Dudley Boer War Memorial
Private Thomas Newell 5463, killed in action at Rietviei, South Africa 16 July 1900
There are no service papers to be found,
any help or links would be very appreciated

kind regards
Philip

Philip,

The only newspaper with Dudley in its title that was functioning at the time of the ABW and has subsequently been digitised is the Dudley Herald - an electronic scan indicates no mention of your man but that might be because the scanner misread his name. He does appear in casualty lists published in other papers. The Roll of Honour website lists him as being buried at Braamfontein Cemetery, Johannesburg but I don't know how they know that.

As you know his regimental number I presume you know he served in the 2nd Battalion of the Shropshire Light Infantry. He can be found on their medal roll on Ancestry but the transciber has read an extraordinarily ornate T for a G (and so would I).

He is also commemorated in Shrewsbury (photo courtesy of the IWM Website):

5474 Private G Wright, 2/SLI who survived the ABW attested on 6 November 1897 so your man with a regimental number 11 less presumably attested not long before.

Regards, David.
