Hi Mike
As a rule of thumb, I would say values currently as follows:
Common TG ( more than 30 ) $ 130 Pvt
Medium TG ( 20-30) $ 250 Pvt
Scarce TG (10-20) $ 400 Pvt
Very scarce TG ( less than 10) $ 800-1200 Pvt

Officers add up to 100% on low end,add about 30 % top end.

That’s would be my experience.

Kind regards
Adrian

In a strange coincidence, in looking up Sydney Walker for this enquiry ( www.angloboerwar.com/forum/5-medals-and-...ng-handwriting#97914 ), the roll shows that Sydney also served in the East London TG.

The writer of the obituary of Sir Thomas Ekins Fuller (an “admirer” of Cecil Rhodes) which appeared in the Luton Times & Advertiser of 9 September 1910 was of the opinion there was an East London Town Guard during the South African War:

For more on Sir Thomas Ekins Fuller see:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Ekins_Fuller

Also the good people of Forres on the Moray Coast in Scotland were told on 20 February 1901 that one of their former townsmen was a Captain in the East London Town Guard as this clipping from the Forres, Elgin & Nairn Gazette shows:

James O Paterson received a claspless QSAM as shown by this extremely informative medal roll for the Cape Government Railways Traffic Department:

Hi Mike, Adrian and others.

I have handled a QSA to the De Aar Town Guard. (as listed on medal roll)

As you know De Aar was an important Railway Junction and a key centre for the Post Office. A number of individuals who served with these two authorities served at one time or another with the Town Guard but were given medals off other rolls such Army Telegraphs and the Imperial or Cape Government Railways.

I believe that the reference to the Nkandla Town Guard for the Anglo Boer War is incorrect – there were of course a few Natal 1906 medals awarded to the “Nkandla Town Guard”.

I have the medal named to the Lieutenant commanding the Veldrift Town Guard. This a late (1910 – impressed as usual) replacement issue to a recipient whose name was initially included under the Hopefield D.M.T. The replacement medal named Lieutenant, Veldrift Town Guard.

There were of course many assembled Town Guards for which no medals were awarded although some of members qualified and received QSA medals through the rendering of “other service” during the War.

The following is an example.

Single – QSA no clasp impressed (D.G. Barry.)

Dirk Gysbert Barry received the medal in his capacity as Acting Civil Commissioner and Resident Magistrate for Bredasdorp.
Barry is also listed as a Private on the unapproved medal roll for the Bredasdorp Town Guard for which No Medals were authorised.
Deputy Administrator Marshal Law from 1 March 1902 until same repealed.
Attorney General Ministerial Division.

William Henry Bond was another member of a Town Guard (Woodstock) who did not receive a QSA medal.

Pair – CGHGS medal one bar: Bech (Sig. Ser. W.H. Bond. D.E.O.V.R.); Volunteer Long Service Medal (Victoria) – (Sergt. Instructor of Signalling W.H. Bond. Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Vol. Rif.)

This pair was acquired from two separate sources. Interestingly, I have noted that the pair, together with a renamed SA medal, was sold by Spinks years ago.

Researching William Henry Bond proved to be particularly difficult until Cam Simpson came up with the following:

“BOND William Henry. 2nd Devonshire Regiment Volunteers – 15 years. Enlisted 26.2.92. Signals Sergeant, Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Volunteer Rifles (9 years), Bechuanaland (Langberg) Rebellion 1896/97. Awarded the Cape of Good Hope Volunteer Long Service Medal (CGG 18.10.98). Builder of Woodstock, Cape Colony. Enlisted 15.5.01. (Age 42). ‘G’ Company, Woodstock Town Guard (No384). Cape Peninsula Regiment.”
