Could a kind soul tell me if a Captain M.H. Grant served in either the West Yorks, or the York and Lancs? Would have been in the Relief of Ladysmith.

I could only find this chap who was attached to the 2nd Brigade
Not sure if it's of any help? Nothing jumped out pertaining to York or Lancs.

Assuming this is the same chap - according to Boer War Services of Officers; additional info is that he served at Colenso, action at Spion Kop, action at Vaal Krantz, action at Pieters Hill and qualified for the clasps as shown in Dave's post.

Yes, the Devons will do perfectly.
It's widely written that a certain Captain M H Grant was in fact the author of a very vivid and frank account of the Natal campaign written under the pseudonym "Linesman". But I couldn't see which regiment he was with. The 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment, it is!
His book, "Words by an Eyewitness" is definitely worth a read, and thanks to the wonderful archive.org can be done free of charge here:

Thank you for this link Rob - I have the group to WM Goodwyn, an officer who served with the 2nd Devons (commanded them in WWI), after the relief of Ladysmith. Although not mentioned by name (a quick search indicating thus), I am sure that, once I have read the account, I will find reference to him.
