Thanks David & Steve; that's makes perfect sense.

I'll post my research once it's finished but it's interesting that eventhough he was given the sentence for sleeping at his post he always stayed with Middlesex Regiment and went on to to be awarded the Military Medal in the Battle of the Somme.

Thanks again.

An extract from the December 1899 attestation papers for a Smethwickian. He attested in Kidderminster, Worcestershire for service in the Worcestershire Company of the IY.

The answer to question 10 to me looks like "Z. O. W. H." or alternatively "2. O. W. H.". If either of my interpretations are correct what do they stand for? Also note they represent the Corps that Sergeant Major Palmer, the recruiting officer, served in.

Assistance is required here please - the attachment below is from a letter Dr E Mosely, Dental Surgeon wrote to the Colonial Secretary in late 1902. I have added how I think it reads but there are gaps....

"I regret I am unable to forward my diplomas as requested as before Ieft England to join the Field Force in Natal .............. all my furniture ... and it is stored in my desk, but as I had to satisfy the War Office that I was duly qualified and registered before I was engaged I venture to think you might dispense with the production of the diploma."

Rory,

I think the first bit is "I warehoused".
Second, possibly "etc".
