Adrian,
As usual all roads seem to lead to you... ;)

Do you have the enlistment records for Sidney Riches? He served with Royston's Horse in 1906 after leaving the Cape Mounted Rifles.

Thanks,

James

James,

All I have is a copy of the hand written enlistment register and he is shown as:

Regimental number 115 and as having enlisted on the 19/04/1906 aged 25 years. NOK being his Father one William Riches of Oaklands Rd, Epsom, Surrey. I assume he served in "A" Squadron.

Hope this helps.

Regards

I had researched the 1906 South African unit Royston Horse for some years regardinf Trooper S. Camilleri of whom I have the 1906 Natal Rebellion medal. I've even had various contacts with the archives of the SADF. Camilleri had serveved in the Imperial Light Horse in 1902 and even later during WWI, always in the SA military. I had located the nominal roll of the two RH squadrons, neither I nor the SADF have the RH enlistment records of the unit as their records commence in 1909 when the SADF was established. I was able to locate the Attestation Papers for Camilleri for the Imperial Light Horse but his nationality is given as a British Subjet.

Considering that the surname and being a British subject points to him being Maltese, it kindled my interest to learn more about him and his origin, which the ILH doesn't clarify. Can you kindly advise me where I may possibly conduct further enquiries? I have contacted various institutions, societies and museums in the UK in the past, but always drew a blank wall. One even suggested that any such records may have remained with the Royston family but I failed to locate any contacts.

Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks
