The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum in Winchester is an excellent museum with on of the best medal rooms it is possible to visit and very good displays on the Boer War.

The museum covers both the KRRC and Rifle Brigade.

The Deal table top

Described as:

The deal table top was used by the officers of 2nd Battalion, The Rifle Brigade, during the South African War.

The table was acquired in the Badfontein Valley just after the Battle of Bergendal on 27 August 1900. It was used, in particular, in the Officers’ Mess at Fort Howard, Lyndenburg, where the Battalion was stationed from October 1900 to April 1901.

Visitors to the Mess were asked |o sign their names on the table. The names were then carved into the table by Lieutenant (later Colonel) W E Davies.

The table thus became a record of many a small, convivial luncheon party.

Wheel bush and gun sight from one the guns lost at Colenso.

Both items were recovered from the Tugela River.
