Wilfred George Howard Marshall was commissioned Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards on 23 August 1884, and was promoted Captain on 23 January 1896, and Major on 28 January 1900. He served in the campaign in the Sudan under Sir Herbert Kitchener in 1898, and was present at the Battle of Khartoum. He subsequently served in South Africa during the Boer War, and took part in the operations in the Orange Free State, April to May 1900; the operations in the Orange River Colony, May 1900 to May 1902, including the actions at Biddulphsberg on 29 May 1900 and Wittebergen; and the operations in the Transvaal, February to March 1901. For his services he was Mentioned in Despatches
