Thomas Vockins was born in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, in 1872 and attested for the Royal Berkshire Regiment at Newbury on 12 October 1891, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment. He served with the Royal Berkshire Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War in South Africa from 15 January 1900 to 26 September 1902, and was discharged on 11 October 1902, after 12 years’ service.
