QSA (3) Orange Free State, Transvaal, Laing's Nek (3689 Pte. G. Virr, Wt: York: Regt);
[ KSA (2) ]

George Virr was born at Bradford, Yorkshire in 1870, the son of Sarah Virr. Enlisting with the 4th (Militia) Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment prior to attesting with the King's Own Scottish Borderers at Sheffield on 29 April 1889. With this unit he saw service in Egypt between 25 November 1889 - 1 January 1890 before being posted to India. While there Virr transferred to the West Yorkshire Regiment and it was with this unit that he returned to Britain on 9 November 1895.

After a year of service in Britain he joined the Army Reserve, remaining there until he was mobilised on 5 April 1900 for service in South Africa with 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Detachments from the Battalion were heavily engaged at Rustenburg in December 1900 and the entire unit was involved in a Battle against Botha's commando at Bothwell on 6 February 1906. While there Virr was convicted of 'disobeying a lawful command' on 30 October 1901 and was imprisoned for 6 months. Released in February 1902 he saw duty until 14 April when he returned to the Britain and was discharged on 14 May.

KSA listed on WO100/324p77. No indication that the KSA was not issued.
