I have very little information on my Grandmother's brother except that he apparently served in the South African Campaign and received both the Queen's and King's medal. I don't know what regiment he served in. In 1891 he (Charles James SMITH) is with his parents in Wiltshire. He married in 1899 as a Private in the Wiltshire Regiment to a local girl in Guernsey, Channel Islands. In the 1901 census his wife is with her family so he was likely in South Africa. In 1911 he is a Dock Labourer in St Peters Port, Guernsey. He later re-enlisted and was killed in France in 1915. I'm hoping to find more information on him.

I assume this is actually 4253 Private Charles James Smith 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment?

Oh wow, yes it is. I only knew of his ID number of 18297 from when he was killed in France. I didn't know he had 4253 when he was in Guernsey. Is is possible to send me a better image of the documents? I could give you my e-mail address here. I know it's the correct person because he married Florence Isabelle KEARLEY in 1899
