Hi Hudson,

It could be that the images you are uploading are to large.
I reduce to about 800 x 600 I find it easier after "Add File" to use "Insert" that will place your pic within your post.

Paul :)

That is a very typical, both, scarce and superb medal, they really have rocketed skywards in terms of value over recent years, it seems very hard to fully understand what exactly was actually going through Philip Anstruther's mind on the day in question, but, he was acting under orders, of course, for poor Richard Ayres, it was a fateful day.

Ayres's medal was one of my first acquisitions to First Boer War participants.

Somebody mentioned to me long ago that he was a member of the band, but I could not confirm that.

I hope that his grave can still be identified. I would also love to see a photo of the memorial.

David. Maybe you should move my offering to a topic "The First Boer War" ??

Hello Henk,
With yet another anniversary of the final act of this sad campaign coming up next week, I had been thinking again of Richard Ayres.
I had also meant to say that he could certainly well have been a bandsman, they were around thirty strong, amongst the first killed and wounded, they were unarmed and quite defenceless with only Philip Anstruther ahead of them, those who survived the initial volley, would have run back toward the wagons to arm themselves, I would think that most would fail to do so.
Again, a super medal.
Regards Frank
