Medal Rolls were received of individuals who were erroneously stated to have qualified for the King's Medal for service with Natal Mounted Rifles, Umvoti Mounted Rifles and the Natal Field Artillery.

Issues as follows were made in 1904:

Natal Mounted Rifles - 150
Umvoti Mounted Rifles - 118
Natal Field Artillery - 95

In December 1905 it was decided that the members of these Corps were not entitled to the Medal as the Natal Volunteers had returned to their homes in October 1900, were not called out again, except for a month in 1901, and had no field service in 1902; and the GOC, South Africa, was requested to return the issued medals.

Correspondence ensued and it was finally decided that, with the exception of the Natal Volunteer Composite Regiment, no Natal Volunteer Corps should be granted the medal.

Certain officers, non commissioned officers and men, against whose names on the roll a note has been made, were allowed to retain their medals as they subsequently had qualifying service with other South African Corps.

It will therefore be seen that no individuals whose names appear on the rolls of the Corps in question are entitled to the King's Medal, unless they had qualifying service with other Corps, to make up the aggregate of 18 months and served with such units during 1902.

The Border Mounted Rifles was a Natal Volunteer Corps.
