“WELCOME HOME” DINNER TO ILFORD SOLDIERS.

The Ilford Town dinner to C.I.V.’s, Essex Volunteers, and Reservists living in the parish, took place in the Drill Hall and Reading-room on Tuesday evening, and was most successful. The cost was defrayed by subscriptions from the townspeople. Messrs F. Newman and H.J. Weston were the secretaries, and Messrs W. Pallant and E.J. Reynolds treasurers. The dinner committee were Messrs F. Newman, W. Pallant, E.J. Reynolds, H.W. King, H. Rose, C.P. Wootton, H.J. Weston, F. Gibbs, J.W.F. Mumford, S. Vickers, H.A.W. Webb, and G.W. Ingram.

Councillor W.P. Griggs, chairman of the Ilford War Fund Committee, presided, and Mr Wm. Ashmole, C.C., was in the vice-chair. There was a large attendance of members of the Urban council and School Board, Volunteer officers, townspeople, and firemen.

The guests were Sergeant YOUNG, Corporal WRIGHT, Privates LINSELL, LINSELL, jun., NEWSON, COOKSON, GREEN, MARCH, BOWMAN, MURRELL, HUTCHINS, and TASKER, all of the C.I.V.; Corpl. WADE, Pt. P. HILL, and Pt. FINCH, of the Imperial Yeomanry; Pt. J. ASHLEY, St John Ambulance, No. 11 General Hospital; Driver H.B. RAMSEY, Hon. Artillery Company; Reservist Drivers R. MANNING and JUBY, Royal Artillery; Reservist Lance-Corpl. RIX, Queen’s Lancers; Reservist Pt. W.G. HOLE, Royal Horse Guards; Reservists Lance-Corpl. ELDRED, Pt. SAVILL, and Pt. O’BRIEN, 1st Essex Regt.; Reservist Pt. WRIGHT, 1st Hants; Corpl. A. HYDE, 14th Hussars; and Corpl. J. MOSS, Kitchener’s Horse.

The Chairman proposed “Her Majesty’s Forces”, alluding with pride to the noble manner in which all branches of the service had responded to the call to South Africa, and regretting that the war was not yet at an end.

Colonel Frank Landon, V.D., Captain A.R. Meggy, and Mr Edward Tuck acknowledged the toast.

The Vice-Chairman proposed “Our Guests”, in an appropriate speech, and the toast was enthusiastically honoured.

Messrs WADE, JUBY, MURRELL, and YOUNG spoke in acknowledgement.

The Chairman presented each of the guests with gold pendants, suitably inscribed, as souvenirs of the occasion.

Mr H.W. King proposed “The Chairman and Vice-Chairman”, and thanks were heartily accorded the treasurers and secretaries for their services.

An excellent programme of music was carried out by Miss Edith Kingsford, Mr H.J. Chatterton, Miss Ella Johnston, Mr W.T. Spencer, Mr Rodney Phillips, Mr Tom Taylor, and Mr W.B. Steele. The accompaniments were played by Mr Malcolm Johnston.
