Three “Vorm B” applications for the award of an ABO medalje to Willem Frederick Coenraad Koekemoer are recorded. Two of these are for recipients who served with the Potchefstroom Kommando and one with the Heidelberg Kommando. It however clearly evident from a comparison of the applicant’s signature on the WWI documents that this recipient served in the Potchefstroom Commando, his service details reading as follows:
“Van af 11 /10/1899 tot 27 Feb 1900 en toe gevangen genomde Paardeberg en naar St Helena gestuur tot die 22ste Nov 1902. 11 December 1900 Magersfontein, Modder Rivier, Mafeking, Rondavelsdrift. Kleinere gevechten voor dat ik gevange genomen werd. ”
William Frederick Koekemoer, aged 35 years, served in German South West with the Potchefstroom “A” Commando Africa from 5 January 1915 to 7 August 1915.
He later served from 4 May 1916 as a Farrier with 6th Regt. S.A. Horse before being discharged 1 December 1917 due to Malaria).
