Hi Brett,

The original book was published circa 1901, and I republished this back in 1992

The book is still available if anyone wants the address.

I just wanted to check with you which source you received this info from.

I have pictures of him while in the war and I will post these as well as a picture of his medal soon.

Thank you

Hi David, So if I have a single clasp Elandslaagte to a Private who was wounded there and invalided home, this would be quite scarce?

regards
Ian

Having collected QSA to the Shropshire L.I., for many years I have not managed to find a single clasp until the other day, although I uselly try to find medals to Shropshire born or connected soldiers, I purchased this medal like wise in case I never found another, It was not till I got a copy of his service papers that I found an interesting case of enlisting in one regiment then trying to join another, as any member found this.

Here is an analysis of the single clasp, single QSAs that have passed through DNW's hands. The plot shows the clasps in descending order.

23 of the 26 QSA clasps (25 if you omit Tugela Heights) are included. Omitted are Paardeberg, Driefonten and Diamond Hill.

Cape Colony - 244
Relief of Ladysmith - 116
Natal - 115
Defence of Ladysmith - 100
Transvaal - 68
Defence of Kimberley - 49
South Africa 1902 - 37
Talana - 28
Belmont - 24
Defence of Mafeking - 24
Rhodesia - 22
Relief of Kimberley - 12
Modder River - 11
Elandslaagte - 10
South Africa 1901 - 9
Orange Free State - 7
Balfast - 6
Laing's Nek - 6
Relief of Mafeking - 5
Wepener - 2
Wittebergen - 2
Johannesburg - 1
Tugela Heights - 1

Not all of the QSAs are 'correct'. For example, the 2 Wepener QSAs are the same medal to Finlayson who earned QSA (4). Duplicates are included. The Tugela Heights recipient (2386 Pte. F. McCabe, S. Lanc. Regt.) earned QSA (4) too.
