Hello

I am researching a family tale that my relative is listed on the Boer War Memorial in Hertford, UK. I have found a newspaper article that seems to confirm this as it says he had been away with Herts Militia and the Western Light Horse. Where could i find enlistment papers or anything that would help me identify if the T Oakman listed on the war memorial is in fact my Great Grandad, Thomas Oakman. I have tried the regiment archives and there aren't records as have been destroyed in the past so don't know where to go now. Thanks

thank you. I have this information already. How do I find out if the T Oakman on the memorial is my relative? My relative is Thomas Oakman born on 26.4.1879, died on 11.11.1921.

Have you looked through the Hertford newspapers of the period for any mentions of Thomas Oakman? The local papers often liked to print letters home from South Africa, and they generally mentioned who the letters had been sent to.

Did your Thomas Oakman take part in the 1901 UK Census?

There are no known repositories for service papers for militia men that served in the war.

At the National Archives at Kew there are attestation papers (WO126/165) and discharge books (WO127/22) for the Western Light Horse, the attestation paper may give the biographical information you seek.

thanks. yes I have one article for a Thomas Oakman who appears in court in November 1902. Thomas oakman states that he had been serving in the militia and WLH. I cannot find him on the 1901 census but there is another Thomas Oakman with DOB of 1877 which could also be my relative if we assume the records aren't 100% accurate. Interestingly the Thomas Oakman listed on forces war records in the WLH states his nationality is South African so this confusing me too.
