I remember looking at the QSA to Morrish in the most recent City Coins Auction

108. – 46 Tpr. C. Morrish Warren’s M.I. VF 800 – 1.200
Medal re-suspendered. Entitled bar SA ’01 Sold with copied medal roll.

That is a very fast turnaround to be sold twice in the month.

ALL the TG QSAs in the Kaplan sale are ex City Coins 68.

The only difference is the reserve is much higher.

Extracts from B85, 15 Nov 17, which bears a strong similarity to B84. On a the few I have checked, the reserve on unsold medals has not changed. The DCM has dropped by R5,000.

James Tatton with a “cow gun” (6 inch howitzer) was attached to the Mounted Infantry Company of The Buffs in the Eastern Transvaal from mid-1900 and is mentioned by name in: “With The Buffs in South Africa” by Lt. Col. J.B. Backhouse. The incident that probably led to the award of Tatton’s DCM took place on 19 November 1900 during Gen. Ben Viljoen’s attack on Balmoral (p 67 of above): “The 6-in howitzer, the only gun in camp, ably handled by Sergeant Tatton, RGA, did excellent work. One shell placed on South West Hill, soon after it was captured, killed two Boers and wounded three others, but failed to burst, or it would have done more damage. Another shell put one of the Boer guns out action, and another obliged the pom-pom to retire. In all 48 shells were fired in various directions during the six hours the attack lasted, and to those who know what a howitzer of this size is like, the hard work can be imagined.” On the night of 18 May 1901 a party of Boers tried to cross the railway near Balmoral. On the first shot being fired at them, the shell burst in the howitzer and blew it to bits. Two gunners (including Tatton’s brother) were killed and Sgt. Tatton and 9 more were injured. He was Mentioned in Dispatches in the London Gazette of 10 September 1901 and the award of the DCM was published in the London Gazette of 27 September 1901. During WWI Tatton must have served in the United Kingdom, as his MIC confirms the award of the single BWM. Contact marks on earlier awards and KSA suspender wobbly. An interesting group with medals from 4 monarchs. Sold with copies of QSA & KSA roll pages, WWI MIC as well as relevant pages from “Buffs” History

In recognition of valuable services rendered with the Forces in East Africa during the present war”. UDF G.O 2630 Reward for War Services South African Force 2044 Motor Desp. Rider W.H. Batchelor, SA Motor Despatch Coy.

Extract from official records, being South African Motor Despatch Rider Company – Records of Service in East Africa (copy included)
“2044 Batchelor W.H. Despatch Rider Landed Kilindini 3:8:1916 Leave to SA 27:2:1917, returned to G.E.A. 18:6:1917. Invalided 17:11:1917. Joined G.H.Q. at Lukugura and went with them through to Morogoro. Then went with first detachment to Kilwa and remained there till he went to SA on leave. Since return through part Lindi operations. Awarded Meritorious Service Medal G.R.O. 549 17:6:1918” Herewith extracts from official records, being, SA Motor Cyclists Corps; E.A. Campaign 1916-1918 Part 1 (pages 1-5) “The SA Motor Cyclists Corps war formed in January 1916 under the command of Col. Fairweather, D.S.O., with Capt D McMillan as adjutant. It consisted of 8 platoons and Headquarters under Lieuts. Hoskyn, McHardy, Henry, Hall, Ramsay, Kelly, Jackson, Houghton and Clarke, respectively. Headquarters was composed of signalers, motor mechanics and c; in addition each platoon had its own mechanics. The uniform consisted of helmet (with yellow diamond flash having red edge), tunic, shirt, corduroy, riding breeches, leather leggings, and British warm overcoat, and for wet weather, oilskin coat and trousers of brilliant yellow hue. Badge on helmet was a flying wheel, and shoulder badges S.A.M.C.C. The machines provided were B.S.A’s and they certainly proved their worth in the field. Gun-buckets were affixed to the front fork as a receptacle for the short rifles issued, and were also used as a means for conveying Lewis guns, signaling equipment and c.

“At Kondoa, Irangi, we linked up with the 2nd Division under General Van Deventer. Cycles were parked near the hospital about 2 miles from the town, and we took up a position on a small hill (some 4 miles outside the town, called Rock Rabbit Ridge, with various infantry and horse units nearby. We were referred to by the other units as “Jimmy Fairweather’s rock rabbits”. One platoon was sent to another hill called Loskop. Patrols were sent out into the adjoining mealie lands to try and contact the enemy, who held a front of 7 miles. The whole division frequently came under shell fire from the German position, where some naval guns of the “Koningsberg” had been mounted.”

“Looking back on our experiences in East Africa, Central Africa, Nyasaland and Portuguese East Africa, we are proud to think we were the pioneer Corps of present day mechanized form of fighting, though little did we think of that at the time. Owing to our great mobility we could be rushed to any threatened spot with the least possible delay, and no one realized this more than General Northey”. “In all over 1000 men were recruited for the S.A.M.C.C. The Corps had engagements with the enemy at Kondoa Irangi, Kidete, Iranga (patrol skirmishes); Tandala and Regone (Portuguese East Africa)”

Herewith extracts from “Reminiscences of the German East Africa Campaign 1916-1918” by H.R. Dewey, which give some idea of the
realities in the Motor Cycle Corps in German East Africa.
