QSA (2) Tal DoL (2048 Messngr: C.B. Margetts Natal Police);
Natal (1) 1906 (2C.Sgt: C.B. Margetts Natal Police);
Permanent Forces of the Empire beyond the Seas LS&GC Medal (GV) (No. 726 2m Cl. Sgt.C.B. Margetts 2nd SAMR).

Cecil Margetts was one of some 50 members of the Natal Police who were present at the Battle of Talana. The QSA rolls note that he was promoted to Lce.Sgt. on 30 September 1901 and that a SA’01 bar was authorised in July 1908. His LS&GC medal was sent to him on 9 August 1916. He died in the Addington Hospital, Durban at the age of 73 on 27 March 1948.

Harry Norton was born during 1867 in Halifax, Yorkshire, he enlisted for service aged 21 on 12th March 1888 having worked as an Overlooker and purchased his discharge from the 7th Dragoon Guards on 7th January 1887.

During his time in India he earned both the India General Service Medal 1854, with 2 bars for Hazara & Samana, with the India General Service Medal 1895, with bar for the Relief of Chitral.

He served in first the Hazara Expedition of 1891, then Miranzai Expedition of 1891, the Isazai Expedition of 1892, the Relief of Chitral during 1895, then the South African Boer War of 1899-1902.

His overseas service:
Home: 09/03/1888 - 24/11/1890
India: 25/11/1890 - 31/01/1896
Home: 1/02/1896 - 21/12/1898
South Africa: 22/12/1898 - 21/09/1902
Malta: 22/09/1902 - 26/02/1905
Crete: 27/02/1905 - 01/10/1905
Home 02/10/1905 - 15/08/1906.

Discharged at his own request after serving for 18 years & 160 days on 15th August 1906 as Corporal & Lance Sergeant.

He died at the age of 79, an Army Pensioner on 23rd June 1944, at 13 the Square, Torrisholme, Morecambe and Heysham.

Both, the missing India General Service and India medals would certainly make this pair far less desirable ,certainly to me and I dare say many others too.

The hammer prices for the trio of Talana QSAs sold this week by DNW. They show weaker prices than has been the norm of late.
