Synchronicity, Mike! I just discovered Robert doing my bio of Thomas. Thanks so much for the picture you found and the additional information about his commission, etc.

Having gone this far, someone tell me where I can find additional pages of the ‘Gram’. I’d like to accumulate more of Frankland's images or even the whole issue to round out the contributions of Hofmeyr’s, Rosslyn’s, and Frankland’s narratives.

Oh, for the truly off topic; where does one put songs on this site? P.S. I didn't realize YouTube would bring over large thumbnails with the links.

Rare British South African war song | marching onto Pretoria. This has the full and different lyrics - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geKCr-SYNM8

Slow night here at the ranch so I cabbaged the picture from the classic version on YouTube.

Payton,

I have a copy of the 1900 facsilmile of The Gram, as does QSAMIKE.
Let me know what you require, and I will see what I can do.

I will also have a go with the photos of Frankland.

Well done finding the WWI pilot's certificate photograph. I see he learned to fly just before WWI (certificate dated 5 Nov 1913).

"Marching to Pretoria" is often still sung in South Africa, but as a bilingual version called "Jou kombers en my matras en daar lê die ding"

The Afrikaans lyrics are just fun, nothing deep is meant.
For a deeper song, listen to Bok van Blerk's "de la Rey"
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

QSAMike gave me a link to ABE Books where the Gram is available. It's $110, too rich for my blood, but at least it is available. The Gram at Abebooks

Also, I'm slow on the uptake: He also gave me this link to the Gram topic here and there is a picture of the cover page where it was printed by Eyre & Spotiswoode in 1900. The Gram Topic on ABW.com

Lo and Behold, there is an online scanned in version: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=umn.31951002049804o&view=1up&seq=1

I’ve kept you guys on this thread for far longer than I anticipated four months ago. I really appreciate all the data you’ve turned me on to. It’s been a gold mine. Just when I think we’ve done as much as possible; something else comes up and off we go again.

Thanks also for looking into Frankland’s pictures. I don’t mean to impose any more than I already do and I’m happy to do the work if you can tell me what program you use.

Payton,

I have put the two "portraits" through the software I have available, and unfortunately only got a 32 percent match.
This certainly isn't a definitive "no", as the Churchill photo is very blurred and pixilated, but it clearly leans in the direction of a mismatch.

To the eye, I would say the aero-certificate photo depicts a man with a longer, thinner face (and longer nose) than the chap standing next to Churchill, though I see what you mean about the downturned smile.
