This magnificent monument, in the grounds of Province House, was the work of Hamilton MacCarthy, who also sculpted the ABW memorial in Ottawa, and the Lieutenant Harold Borden monument in Canning, Nova Scotia.

The Canada Site has an excellent page on the memorial - www.thecanadasite.com/art/art34c_maccarthy3.html

ERECTED
BY THE PEOPLE OF
NOVA SCOTIA
IN HONOUR
OF THOSE WHO SERVED
AND IN MEMORY OF
THOSE WHO FELL IN THE
SOUTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN
1899-1902

THIS STONE WAS LAID
BY H.R.H. THE DUKE OF CORNWALL AND YORK
WHO WITH HIS ILLUSTRIOUS CONSORT
VISITED HALIFAX OCT 19 1901
GOD SAVE THE KING

DEPARTURE FROM HALIFAX

Centre-left appears to be a small group of elderly men, perhaps reminiscing on their past service in the army? Also a youth up a ladder so that he can see over the crowd of well-wishers.

Two wives of the departing servicemen comforting each other, and a small girl (with a toy?). Behind are two dogs. Are they fighting, or imitating the women in comforting each other as their masters depart?

Is that a paddle steamer out at sea?

Spot the small rowing boat. The bandsmen are drummer (with a grand moustache) and bugler. Is the one on the right playing a fife?

That must be the most elaborate Boer War memorial in existence! It must have taken a long time and much effort to complete. Even your post on it must have been a mission!
Thank you.

Brett
