Gentlemen,
As this is a Boer War forum, moreover, two members of my family worked for the company, one in the 19th century and the other in the early 20th century, I'd also like to add that Greenwood's were the leading manufacturer of horse shoes and many members of our Cavalry, Yeomanry and MI rode around the veldt on shoes made in the foundries at Armley! :woohoo:
The country really was "Great" in those days!

Thanks for all the information I have printed it out and filed it away for my future reference.....

Yes I did use the name Dum Dum as a generic term.....

Hello Ian,
It would do me the world of good if I actually had read the bottom line of Mikes original post, before I open my mouth, sorry, as you say, Canadian made, Greenwoods clearly do not enter into this anywhere!
Sorry Ian, all my fault!
Kind regards Frank

Yes, "Dum Dum" has been widely used generically - and incorrectly. The true "Dum Dum" is a specific TYPE of expanding ammunition. And might I say a quite rare one. As described in the first post, none of the rounds were made by Greenwood and Batley; at the time of the ABW, their code was GB.

Chaps
Thanks for the responses! I have made a bit of a study of ABW small arms ammunition types over the years and - if anyone is interested - I can do a couple of pix of unusual types and post them hopefully over this weekend.
Regards again.

I would also be very interested in seeing this in print....

I have been offered a number of pieces over the years but passed them by as I did not have any information as you can see me calling the rounds as Dum Dum pieces....

Any knowledge helps.....

Mike
