Anyone know what the initials V.C.R. stand for? Trooper T. Jones Evans (possibly hyphenated) returned to Pencader, Carmarthenshire.

PRESENTATION TO TROOPER T. JONES-EVANS. - On Friday a grand concert was held at the Board Schools to commemorate the safe return of Trooper T. Jones Evans, V.C.R., who has lately returned from South Africa.

(Welsh Gazette and West Wales Advertiser, Thursday 22nd August 1901)

Volunteer Composite Regiment www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/so...r-composite-regiment

It seems as if Jones served previously with the Durban Light Infantry

I once had a published roll " The Natal Volunteers" (?) - can not for the life of me see it now.
Looking for Salutries, Salootries and Veterinary Duffadars.
I collect primarily QSAs to Indian Recipients.

Berenice,

He is listed on both the NVCR and DLI nominal rolls. Possibly 533 Pte F J Evans in the DLI from 29 Sep 1899 and then as 122 Tpr NVCR 1 Oct 00 to 6 Jun 01 (resigned). If this is T J Jones in the DLI, the nominal roll shows him serving there until the end of the war. I am not sure if NVCR men resigned/left their parent unit?

A Corporal T J Evans earned the Natal (1) Medal in 1906 with the DLI.

My understanding of the VCR is that it was an agglomeration of men from different units, so the men did not leave their parent unit. I don't know if anyone enlisted directly into the VCR.

Thanks Meurig. The nominal roll for the NVCR shows many 'home' units but there are some blanks so they possibly enlisted directly.
