Sorry for thanking you rather later than planned but I've been under the cosh at work. It was very interesting to see that many DCM holders did not have a citation to support the award. Of the three that I'm seeking I have found only one so far the others are: 15443 SSM S Giles 18th Battalion and 12649 Staff Sgt Major T Jackson 18th Battalion who are the two unnamed awards in the 1905 Regimental History. They do appear in the DCM table but that's it and interestingly they both received MiDs as well. The only other missing one is Lt Col Roger Parke who commanded the 18th Bn and who was awarded the CB . Again no citation for the CB that I can find.
These extracts are really useful. Do I assume that the 23rd Bn did not get any MiD's or other decorations? There was also a unit (Bn minus) called confusingly the 1st (18th Bn) Sharpshooters as well as an independent company (117th company, 25th Bn) raised by the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) IY who were a Home Service regiment raised by the Earl of Dunraven from the 18th/21st and 23rd companies. The 4 squadrons that formed the new regiment were formed from the previous battalions - A Sqn being found from the 18th, B Sqn from the 21st and C Sqn from the 23rd whilst D Sqn were formed from new recruits and other yeomen. The 117th company mentioned earlier was disbanded in country with many of its members staying on there.. All rather confusing but typically Yeomanry!
Hi Tim..... Now you have me a little confused...… Here are all the Battalions and Companies that you mentioned..... Mike
6th (Scottish) Battalion
17th (Ayrshire and Lanarkshire) Company, raised 1900; co-sponsored by Ayrshire Yeomanry Cavalry, and Lanarkshire Yeomanry Cavalry
18th (Queen's Own Royal Glasgow and Lower Ward of Lanark) Company, raised 1900
19th (Lothians and Berwickshire) Company, raised 1900
20th (Fife and Forfar Light Horse) Company, raised 1900; co-sponsored by 1st Fifeshire Light Horse Volunteers, and 1st Forfarshire Light Horse Volunteers
107th (Lanarkshire) Company, raised 1901
108th (Royal Glasgow) Company, raised 1901
18th Battalion (Sharpshooters).
Raised 30 Dec. 1899; embarked at Southampton 6 Apr 1900; landed at Beira Apr. 1900 (joined Rhodesian Field Force); First contingent returned to UK Jun 1901, replaced by second draft Mar-Aug 1901; perpetuated Aug 1901 by 3rd County of London (Sharpshooters) Imperial Yeomanry.
67th (Sharpshooters) Company, raised 1900
70th (Sharpshooters) Company, raised 1900
71st (Sharpshooters) Company, raised 1900
75th (Sharpshooters) Company, raised 1900
23rd Battalion (3rd Sharpshooters).
Raised Jan. 1901; embarked for South Africa Mar. 1901; perpetuated Aug. 1901 by 3rd County of London (Sharpshooters) Imperial Yeomanry.
90th (Sharpshooters) Company, raised 1901
91st (Sharpshooters) Company, raised 1901
92nd (Sharpshooters) Company, raised 1901
93rd (Sharpshooters) Company, raised 1901
The 6th Bn were not Sharpshooters and neither were the 25th Bn. There were 4 bns which were the original 18th Bn (67th/70th/71st/75th Coys); the 1st (18th ) Bn formed from a reinforcement group plus others from the 21st and 23rd Bns; the 21st Bn (80th/81st/82nd /3rd Coys; the 23rd Bn( 90th/91st/92nd/93rd Coys) and finally the 117th Company which was formed from veterans in the 3rd County of London Yeomanry which was a Home Service unit only. Hopefully that clears things up! The confusion comes from the 1st/18th Bn which seems to not have had numbered companies according to the 1905 Regimental history. I had to read it all a number of times to make sure I got it right. The 117th Coy was a coy within the 25th Bn which was a mix of heritage: the bn was most definitely not a Sharpshooter one.
Hi Tim..... I will leave it up to you then..... The information that I had is from an article "The History of the Imperial Yeomanry" and the list of Battalions and Companies that are shown there in..... Also from the Regimental History of the Imperial Yeomanry "Absent Minded Beggars by Will Bennett and from the book B.B.M. ……
