The casualty rolls show 18 battle casualties for this date; 12 to Bethune's MI (6 KIA, 6 Wo) at Stoffelsburg, eastern Cape. The Boers were commanded by Smuts according to Stirling (The Colonials in South Africa 1899-1902, (1907). Stirling, John. JB Hayward & Son Suffolk 1990).

Not sure what happened around Riversdale then.

Thanks but not the skirmish I am after - I don't think Smuts got this far down.

Latest info I have is that Commandant Theron lured into a kloof where they were ambushed in what the reports call "Death Acre". A hospital was established on a nearby farm to care for the British wounded and to cover things up Martial Law was declared.

What is the source of this "latest info"?

The source is from the owner of the property where all this took place. His family where living there at the time of the incident.

However none of this can be confirmed which is why I have been given the job of actually trying to pin down where the fighting took place,
