The 8th Contingent was a strong battalion of mounted infantry which
formed part of the Commonwealth Horse (see that corps). The 8th,
commanded by Lieutenant Colonel H Chauvel, who had served with distinction
as Adjutant of the 1st contingent, arrived in South Africa too late to see
fighting.
