History of the Militia
The tradition of an amateur, part-time force that supplements the regular
army goes back many years. The oldest auxiliary force was the militia
which first appeared in 1558 but traces its history from the 9th century.
Originally, these forces were usually called out to help enforce domestic order
or to protect against potential invasion.
The Militia were a territorial force and answered to the county High Sheriff
and, in later years, the Lord Lieutenant. Officers had to be local land
owners and service was voluntary for the most part. Many classes of people
were exempt from service in the militia including soldiers and men of the
church.
Reforms between 1761 and 1802 changed the militia into a dedicated reserve
for the army by removing the policing and national defence responsibilities.
However the demands to make regular soldiers available to fight in the Crimean
War and Indian Mutiny led to the mobilisation of most militia units for home
defence in the 1850s.
In line with the reorganisation of regiments in 1881, the militia battalions
were redesignated as the 3rd and 4th battalions of regular infantry regiments.
The 32 Irish militia battalions were spread across only 10 regiments with the
result that some regiments received up to 4 militia battalions.
Many militia battalions provided men for the Boer War.
In 1908, the militia ceased to exist and the manpower was transferred to the
Special Reserve. Renamed the Militia again in 1921 they structure was
finally disbanded in 1953. |
