Captain Daniel Dow, who was known as ‘Fairweather’ Dow, received the Transport Medal as Chief Officer of the Servia, belonging to the Cunard Line. He was later Commodore of the Cunard Line and Captain of both the Lusitania and the Mauretania in his time. He had the distinction of being the Captain of the Mauretania when she took the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic from the Germans. He later broke the record several times in the course of his career.

Captain Dow was awarded the Silver Medal and Illuminated Certificate of thanks by the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society for the rescue of the crew, eight in number, of the brigantine Mayflower, abandoned in the North Atlantic on the 16th January, 1914.  First Officer R L Alexander, in charge of the lifeboat, was awarded the Silver Medal, Illuminated Certificate, and a Silver-mounted Barometer, while Extra Third Officer D F W Foden received the Silver Medal and Illuminated Certificate.

Owing to ‘ill health’, it is said, he was not aboard the Lusitania when she was torpedoed and sunk, Captian Turner having taken his place. Colin Simpson, in his book Lusitania states:

‘On 8 March (Dow) informed Alfred Booth that though he did not mind commanding merchant vessels in these waters, he refused to carry the responsibility of mixing passengers with munitions or contraband. Possibly he was influenced in his thinking by the fact that on his final voyage the enterprising Captain Gaunt had loaded the double bottom of the Lusitania with 100,000 gallons of diesel oil, which had not improved either Dow’s peace of mind or his sea-sickness-prone stomach. Alfred Booth decided that Dow was suffering from severe strain and looked around his staff for another master.  He chose Captain William Turner.’

Lusitania was torpedoed off Old Head of Kinsale in the Irish Sea on the 7th May 1915, with the loss of over 1,200 lives.
