Eaton,
Captain William Arnold
Of
Middelburg Cape Colony, and of the Sports Club, London, was born at Lapworth,
Warwickshire, April 7, 1870; is son of Canon Eaton, and was educated at
Marlborough College, entering 'The Buffs' in 1890, since when he has served
with the relief force in Chitral in 1895 (medal and clasp); the operations
in the NW Frontier of India, 1897-8, including the action of Landakai
(clasp); Northern Nigeria in 1900, when he served with the Munshi Expedition
(wounded, despatches; medal and clasp); and the Boer War, 1900-02, as DAAG
(Queen's and KSAs and two clasps). He was appointed Staff Captain,
Middelburg, Sub. District, Cape Colony, May 27, 1904. Captain Eaton's
recreations are racing and polo, and he is a member of the Jockey Club of
South Africa. He married, in 1904, Miss P M Douglas, daughter of Andrew
Douglas.
Eden, Lieutenant Schomberg Henley Eden, Black Watch
Son
of the late Henley Eden and grandson of the late Primus of Scotland, was
born in Perth on 18th March 1873. He was educated at St Mark's School,
Windsor, and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Battalion the Black Watch,
from 3rd Royal Scots Militia, 24th March 1897; promoted Lieutenant, 12th
December 1899; Captain, 13 June 1903; Major, 17th February 1915; Lieutenant
Colonel commanding 1st Battalion, 15th September 1920.
He
served in the South African War and received the Queen's Medal. He was
posted to RMC, Sandhurst, as a Company Officer, and later as Commanding a
Company from 4th September 1912 to 15th March 1915. In the Great War
he was Staff Captain and Brigade Major from 21st March 1915 to 3rd October
1915; DAA and QMG 19th Division from 4th October 1915 to 7th December 1916;
AA and QMG 55th Division from 8th December 1916 to 8th May 1919. He
was awarded CMG, DSO, was made a Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1st January 1918,
and also received Belgian Order of the Crown, 5th Class, and Legion of
Honour, 5th Class. He is in possession of 1915 Star, British and Victory
Medals, and was Mentioned in Despatches six times. He was employed as AA and
QMG Rhine Armies from 9th May 1919 to 23rd June 1920.

Elin,
Henry Dyne
Third son of George Elin, JP, of Leahoe, Hertford, where he was born in
1867. He was educated at Rugby School, and has since had varied experiences
in the backwoods of Queensland, the orange groves of Florida, and in
Rhodesia, where he served with the Chartered Company's forces in 1890-91
during the occupation of Mashonaland. He also saw active service with
Paget's Horse in the Boer War (medal), and is now a director of the Sudan
Mines, Ltd. He is a keen sportsman, and especially fond of shooting,
yachting, and croquet.

Ellerman, Sir John Reeves, Knt
Is
a leading South African ship-owner, who assisted the Government in providing
transports for the troops at the time of the Boer War . He was created
Knight on the occasion of the King's birthday, 1905.

Captain H C, Scots Guards
Late
of the 3rd Battalion Scots Guards, served in the Boer War, and was severely
wounded at Modder River. He is now on the retired list.

Lord
Ennismore, born 1866, was the son of the 3rd Earl of Listowel, and was
formerly in the 1st Life Guards.
Epler,
Adolphe,
Knight of the Imperial Royal Austrian Franz Joseph's Order, of Johannesburg,
and of the Rand and New Clubs, is the son of a well-known Austrian Govt,
official who at one time was chief inspector of Northern Railway System of
Austria, and an Imperial Austrian Councillor. Educated in Vienna, he
commenced business in that city in and remained there until 1889, when he
left for SA, and proceeded to Johannesburg, remaining there during the whole
time of the war. In conjunction with A Brakhan and E Boucher, he formed the
Official Police for the protection of the mines, holding the rank of Captain
In May, 1901, he was appointed by Lord Milner as a Town Councillor for
Johannesburg, having the unique distinction of being at the time the only
non-British subject on the Council. As a representative of Austro-Hungarian
capital he is a director of several gold mining companies. He has been
president of the Austro-Hungarian Benefit and Patriotic Society in
Johannesburg since 1891, and was decorated by the Emperor of Austria in
1900. Since 1897 he has acted continuously on the Executive Committee of the
Transvaal Chamber of Mines.
Erroll, (19th
Earl of), Brigadier-General Charles Gore, LLD, DL
born in Canada in 1852,
and is son of the 18th Earl. He was educated at Harrow, and became a cornet
in the Royal Horse Guards in 1869, rising to the command of the regiment in
1891.

Escombe, who died at the close of 1899, was intimately associated with affairs
connected with Natal, and universally esteemed.

Lord Essex
was formerly in the Grenadier Guards. He retired in 1882, but instantly
offered his services when the need for them arose.

John Emrys, CMG
Born at Abergele, Denbighshire, Aug 18, 1853, and is eldest son of Emrys
Evans, of Cotton Hall, Denbigh. Educated at the Liverpool Institute and the
Denbigh Grammar School, he joined the National Provincial Bank of England in
1870, and in 1882 transferred his services to the Standard Bank of South
Africa. Mr Evans was British Vice-Consul at Johannesburg from Aug, 1897,
until the declaration of war, Oct 11,1899; was Financial Adviser at
Bloemfontein, March, 1900; Financial Adviser to Lord Roberts, June, 1900;
Controller of the Treasury, Transvaal, Aug, 1900, and Auditor General in the
Transvaal from April to December 31, 1901. Lord Milner nominated him a
member of the Johannesburg Town Council in June, 1902, and he became an
elected member in November, 1903. He is also a Director (and Vice Chairman)
of the National Bank of South Africa the Johannesburg Consolidated
Investment Company, Henderson's Consolidated Corporation, the Vereeniging
Estates, Sheba GM, add other companies. His recreations are fishing
shooting, and golf. Mr Evans married, in 1893, Johanna Margareta, daughter
of P G Leeb, of Wynberg, near Cape Town.

as Lieutenant with the Royal West Kent Light Infantry from 5 April 1871 to
21 August 1874, on special service in South Africa from February 1900 to
March 1902 (graded as AAG). CB Jun 1903; Commandant prisoners of war Simon’s
Town, South Africa and in command of the troops and prisoners of war on St
Helena; Acting Governor of St Helena from April to September 1901, (Medal,
Cape Colony clasp): GSP 29 September 1906, employed under War Office 15
December 1914. He died 20 May 1921.

Evetts, Lieutenant Colonel S M
Late of the 16th ( Queen's) Lancers, and of the 2nd Battalion Camcronians
(Scottish Rifles), died on March 9, 1905, at Woodstock, at the age of
fifty-six. He served in the Boer War (1899-1902) as District Commandant and
with the Imperial Yeomanry, receiving the medal with two clasps.
