The Order of the Bath is the second highest order of chivalry in England.
The Order was revived by King George I in May 1725 with one class and one
division. The title of the Order arose from the medieval practice of
ritual washing as a symbol of spiritual purification. Until 1815, Knights
would still follow the ancient rite of bathing. After the Napoleonic Wars,
the Order was expanded to include a civil division and three classes: Knight
Grand Cross (GCB), Knight Commander (KCB) and Companion (CB).
