When the Titanic sank on 15 April 1912 there were at least two Boer War veterans on board ship, excluding the Captain, Edward Smith, who was awarded the Transport Medal. There must have been others as well. The two, both of whom drowned and whose bodies were never found, are:

1. Junior Assistant Second Engineer Herbert Harvey, who had served with the 46th (Belfast) Company of the 13th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry and was captured at Lindley. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with three claps and the King's South Africa Medal with one clasp.

2. Assistant Storekeeper Charles Morgan who served in the Western Province Mounted Rifles as Charles Bird. This photograph is coming up for auction at Henry Aldridge's on 24th October.

Good Morning Justin.....

Interesting but a quick question......

I thought that the Imp. Yeo. could not get the KSA with one bar if he did it must be near unique......

Hello

If you search www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/ using "Boer" it reveals a ABW number of veterans.

Harvey's entitlement was QSA: CC,OFS,T,SA01

Having databased the IY KSA roll I am 99.9% certain his name is not on it.
