I am trying to trace the Crosson family history for the family tree and all I have found was a
W Crosson Private 1472 Cape mounted rifles in Boer War.(Provisional list of Wepener recipients. How can I verify that this person was indeed my ggrandfather?. I know his name was William ,havent a clue what ggrandmother's name was but remember the conversations my gran had about the Kokstad area. Can anyone show me the way to go ?

thanks so much

Hi there,

I can add a few things.

I once had Crosson's QSA and KSA in my collection. I still have the following information to hand, it's not much but here it is.

He was born approx 1865 and enlisted into the CMR as 1472 Pte on the 1st October 1885 at the age of 20 years in King william's Town.

His record sheets shows that he enjoyed the drink and had 7 drunk charges noted. All told,he served a few weeks CB for this and a few other offences. He was promoted a few times and reduced in rank as well a few times but with all this, he was still around on the 13/11/1911 when he re enrolled.

The sheet confirms the award of the QSA with the CC, Wepener and WIttebergen clasps and the KSA with both date clasps.

I did have all the transfers and promotion dates but this was sold off with the medals many years ago.

I believe that his Father was also named William and that his Mother was Mary??

I trust this helps a little bit.

Hello Frank,

My daughters BSC Medical Science Degree at UCT took first priority in those days. Moved on a few good groups to pay for her education.

She said she would pay me back one day !!!! :( :( still waiting

Hello Adrian,
Never mind, he might not come again, but, another similar pair will, Wepener's are getting quite hard to find though, I have not seen any around here at any of the provincial fairs for quite some time now, I think the same is true of all good QSA's really, all the clasps used to be quite easy to get, sadly no longer!

Hello Frank,

I must agree with you.

Many QSA's can be found on local auctions here from time to time but the interesting clasps such as Wepener, Elandslaagte, DOM and Rhodesia do seem to be very few and far between.
