Robin,
I'd be very interested to know more about the "register" you mention, can you show a photo, as already mentioned, surviving rank and file papers for the Imperial Yeomanry Scouts are in WO126/66 at Kew, the Union of South Africa was only created in 1910.

His register for the WPMR mentions a business adress in Johannesburg.
Where can I find his enlistment for the IYS and which DMT did he join?
I managed to find a clue on Findmypast website: He left the Cape in 1901. Most likely to the UK first.
Thanks for the help,
Robin

I found copies of his files on eg.this website + I found a millitary record in Kew, but that might not be one and the same person...
He was born either in Harting Sussex in 1971 or more likely in London in 1865 (as William Arthur).

Most probably he lived in SA from aprox. 1880 tot 1896, left to Prince Edward Island and returned to SA around 1900 to join in the Boer War (he had 3 kids and lost his wife in SA!).

I've attached some leads in this message that might be handy.

Sincerely hope someone can help in this complicated case.

Cheers & Merry christmas!

Robin

I've got the millitary file of Arthur Pay (drafted in 3-12-88, nr 2992,1st Royal Sussex Regiment)
He served for a period, was added to the reserves on 2-12-96 and recalled on 2-1-00 and posted on 19-2-00.
Problem is that it might be a different (William) Arthur Pay. My WA Pay was is SA most likely between 1888> till 96, and got 3 kids, and came back in 1900.
Story goes he was shipped home after being injured.
Fact is that he was a mining engineer and expert with explosives (which is handy in warfare i presume;-)
