Hello,

I have another family photo that was given to me recently.
The gentleman sitting down is believed to be John Thomas Gribbin born in 1875 Whitehaven. I am led to believe that he may have also fought in the second Boer War. In the photo it appears that he is a corporal, wearing a slouch hat that may be indicative to the issued uniforms of the time period. I came across a J.T Gribbin in the medal & award rolls on ancestry.
Reg# 15613 44th Battery Royal Field Artillery. A second or third opionion would be much appreciated.

Thank you
SL

His rank on the roll is Bombardier which would give him two stripes, just as in the picture.

Hi David,
Thank you for the information. I may have been wrong about the record information I supplied to you,as John Thomas Gribbin was born in 1875 Whitehaven. You mention a James Thomas Gribbin 1878 Manchester,Lancashire WO97.
John Thomas Gribbin must have served in a different regiment other than the Reg# 15613 44th Battery Royal Field Artillery.I'll keep searching David.

Thank you

Hello,
Recently while researching our local Echunga (South Australia) cemetery I came across the death of John Thomas Gribbin 61yrs.on 2/12/1936 at nearby Mount Barker. The grave is unknown but the local newspaper carried a small obit. which stated ''was a man of very fine character with a distinguished war record , having served both in the Boer War and the Great War , during which he was a prisoner of war for several months'' There was a John Thomas Gribbin (Aged 36 +8/12)born Whitehaven, Cumberland joined the Australian army on 24/11/1914 discharged 2/2/1915, served 8 years with the West Yorkshire Regiment NOK sister at Arlington Place, Hunslett, Leeds.
He could have been related. Assume the above obit. refers to yours and that he was in the British army in WW1,
Sheehan
