Here I go then with a question, be nice please.

I have been researching Cockermouth memorial and cemetery mostly WW1 and WW2.

But in my research in the cemetery I have came across a casualty of the Boer war, a L/cpl Frank Mortimer of the Border Regiment. I think I have all the details on Frank and also a picture of his headstone.
But what I would like to know is could there be any more casualty's from Cockermouth, and where can I find out if there are any.

Regards Mike.

Hello Mike

I have been cataloguing memorials to the Anglo-Boer War for over 20 years, I don't believe there is a memorial in Cockermouth (and you can confirm).

In Kendal there is a memorial to the 31 men from Westmoreland & Cumberland who died. This won't list their home towns.

Service papers to men who died were destroyed so the newspaper's as Berenice suggests are the best place to start.

Good luck.

Hi Meurig,

You have just answered two of my questions in one there cheers :cheer:
Are there any service records still available and if you say they are destroyed WHY !!,I was going ask if there would be a service record regarding Frank Mortimer ?

You are correct there are no memorials to the Boer war in Cockermouth or anywhere around the West of Cumbria that I know, and I have taken a lot of photos of memorials so if there was any I would have spotted them.

So it looks like I will be looking through the microfiche's of Workington Library.

Regards Mike.

Hello Mike

Service papers do exist and have been digitised on Ancestry and FindmyPast.

Good luck with the newspaper trawl.
