Hi Deon

A Burger Jacobus Eduard Steyn, age 28, of Sterkfontein, Heilbron was taken prisoner with Gen Prinsloo's surrender on 30 July 1900. His PoW number was 9824 and he was sent to Ceylon on the "Mongolian".

Could this be your great great grandfather?

Hi,steyn may be a common name, I don't know, but this is a page from my ledger/diary that was kept buy an Officer it mentions many Boers that were captured etc, It might be a long shot but might ring a bell.

Hi there. Thanks for this. The Steyn I am referring to brothers were Johannes Jacobus Steyn, Christiaan Dietklif Steyn, Petrus Paulus Johannes Steyn, Jasper Johannes Steyn, Johannes Andreas Steyn, Johan Daniel (Antroos) Steyn, Hendrik Johannes Steyn, Hermanus Hendrik Steyn. The information I have on where Jacobus Eduard Steyn were arrested in that it was at Fouriesburg. I will be really great if you can see if you might have anything on this in the diary.
Again thanks for you assistance

Hi there. Thanks so much for the information. I also had confirmation from the database at www.anglo-boer.co.za as per your information. The only difference is that his prisoner number was 9284. I wasn't aware that he was taken prisoner with Gen Prinsloo though. This is a great finding. Do you perhaps have any more information or documentation?
Much appreciated
Deon

Hi, this is the only other reference to Steyn in the book, The mobile column referred to I believe is Colonel Colville's column that operated around the Heidelberg and Standerton areas, best regards.
