Dear All,

Firstly, what a wonderful site. Thank you.

We are trying to trace my Great-Grandfather who we believe was killed in South Africa whilst serving with the Cheshire Regiment. He was born and bred in Macclesfield, Cheshire, and left behind a young widow and two small children, in the town.

W. McGuinness (Private, 2nd Battalion) is named on a Cheshire Regiment memorial in Chester Cathedral, but, after carrying out a name search, we can't see him on the Anglo-Boer War website.

Here is a link to the Chester Cathedral details;

www.roll-of-honour.com/Cheshire/ChesterCathedralBoerWar.html

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Thank you,
Shaun David McGuinness

Shaun,

You won't find his name on this site yet. That is still WIP.

There is a Pte W McGuiness listed for the 2nd Cheshires in the book In Memoriam. Unusually there is no soldier's number nor details of what happened to him.

I will see what I can find...

Shaun,

I cannot find any mention of him in The Times casualty listings.

David, Mike,

Thank you very much indeed for your kind replies.

The family have just located my Grandfather's birth certificate, which confirms that his father's, my Great-Grandfather's, name was in fact Charles John McGuinness.

So the W. McGuinness on the Chester Cathedral Boer War memorial seems to be unrelated.

Does a 'Charles John McGuinness' appear in your records at all?

I am most grateful to both of you.

Shaun

I have looked through the medal rolls for him, and the voluntary rolls also and not found anyone of that name. I have also looked at various casualty sources and again, nothing. What is his date of birth?

I have found a Charles John McGuinness, born about 1898, with a death date of June 1966, in Macclesfield?

Doug.
