Good afternoon. I would be grateful if anyone can tell me what type of work a soldier in the rifles would be doing here in 1904/05, returning again after the war for 1 year and 106 days please?
Annie

Apologies, he had been in the rifles but enlisted in the Royal Garrison Regiment in 1903 so, to answer my own question, I imagine he would have been on garrison duties during his period in Bloemfontein.

I have the medals of a Scottish soldier (Black Watch), who served in the Royal Garrison Regiment at Fort Napier in Pietermaritzburg from 11/4/1904 until 18/8/1906. He settled in South Africa afterwards.

Troops had been garrisoned in the Cape Colony since the British occupation early in the 19th Century, and in Natal since the 1840's. Presumably the same happened in the Orange River Colony and Transvaal after the Boer War ended. All the British garrisons in South Africa were withdrawn in 1914.
