Good Evening Gentlemen.....

We have all seen medals show up at sales, at auctions and mostly now-a-days on the most popular online site.....

If the moderators will allow, and they can delete if they wish of course, I would like to start a thread on Scary Medals.....

Any member can post of course.....

A warning system for:

Medals that have been tampered with.....
Medals that have been renamed......
Medals that have a doubtful history.....
Medals that are outright copies.....

etc.....

Hello Mike,
Sadly any such thread would be never ending, there are just so many problem medals offered for sale every day here, but, I do think that they represent only a tiny percentage of what is available overall in todays market, moreover, a great many can be checked out by any potential buyer before he parts with his hard earned money.
Problem medals from many sources have been discussed on here before, some from the larger salerooms, but, I suspect that David will not want this site to turn into a hunting ground for grievance stricken buyers and any resulting legal issues such as liable or defamation.
However, I know where you are coming from with this and the dishonest in this field really do annoy me, caveat emptor is all I can offer I'm afraid.
Kind regards Frank

I know I got into trouble last time for mentioning this, but I still feel as you do, the honest dealers, and they do make honest mistakes, have nothing to fear and everything to gain.

Gentlemen,
Have you ever noticed that some medals actually improve with age too, I recently came across an old friend from the Manchester's who I used to own, when I did own it, I would have described it as VF, when I saw it rently listed by a well known provincial dealer here, it had become "Near EF"

My most favoured acquisition, the QSA to Tpr H C Gorton, ILH, went from F- in 2008 to VF in 2013 - at the same auction house! Coincidentally, while the actual condition of the medal remained the same, the price realised rose from ZAR11 000 to R24 200.

Medal collecting is a very curious hobby!

Brett
