From a lot offered on BidorBuy ( www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/533312084/Set_of...als_To_CJ_Burns.html )

A renamed QSA. The other medals look OK.

The seller says:

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE VIEWED ALL PICTURES CAREFULLY AS PICTURES FORM AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE DESCRIPTION

This item is an vintage/ antique item and by bidding you do understand it as such.
No guarantee or warranty is offered or implied on any vintage / antique items.
The item is sold as is.

No mention of the renaming.

Picture courtesy of Warwick and Warwick

Described as '1899 QSA 5 clasps re-named in official looking style to 5777 Pte J.W. Argent Gren Gds and 1902 KSA both clasps re-named in neat capitals to 5777 Pte J.W. Argent Grenadier Gds, very fine. With copied rolls, all clasps confirmed'

The top medal, the KSA, is clearly renamed. The QSA does not look renamed to me. A closer look would be needed of the rim to see if it has been officially renamed.

Here is an example from a recent American auction; sold for USD120 (hammer); the original recipient was only entitled to 1x of the clasps on the medal & was not identified as a renamed medal.

Not an example of a re-engraved medal but a record of the act.

"Returned medal engraved Claw. Re-engraved and re-issued to man - by AAG for Car. on 16/12/1903."

The medal roll is dated July 8th 1901. 4190 Private William Clay appears to be the only one of the 115 rank & file of the first contingent of the Pembrokeshire IY to request a correction to the QSAM he was sent.

As the world Cycling Championships are in progress in Glasgow it seems appropriate to report on one of William's pre-ABW activities, as told by the Evening Express of 19th July 1897.

The current 1 hour record is held by Filippo Ganna (Italy) at 35 miles 316 yards. However, Filippo is a professional, set his record on 8th October 2022 at altitude where the lower air resistance outweighs the lower oxygen available and using rather superior equipment (which would probably have had William scratching his head). On the other hand Filippo was not paced. 26 miles 21 yards is still pretty good going and exceeds anything I ever achieved (but not on a track and many moons ago now). [/size]
