Do you know the name of the Indian Prince in this article from the Illustrated London News, January 06, 1900?

Also from the Reading Eagle of 28th December 1899 in the same vein
" An interesting feature of to-day's news is the patriotic offers of service from the Indian Princes. The Nizam of Hyderabad replying to a toast proposed by Lord Curzon, the Viceroy, at a banquet in Calcutta, said the proudest title he possessed was that of being the Queen's faithful ally , adding that his purse, his army and his sword were ever at her disposal."

Maharajah Scindia ( Maharajah of Gwalior ) offered 300 trained Artillery horses, 700 transport ponies,200 carts for active service in South Africa. In addition 1000 "selected men" for duty in South Africa. Also The "Maharajah would be glad to serve personally on Lord Roberts' Staff, or elsewhere, in any capacity, even at the base of operations. Viceroy to Secretary of State for India, 27th December 1899 WO108/404

9 Gwalior Imperial Service Lancers and 25 syces served for the duration of the war at the Cradock Remount Station (?) WO100/296 p 388-389 & WO100/234p109. The Maharajah did not serve.

The Nizam of Hyderabad sent the representatives of the 1st (Bloemfontein Remounts Station ?) ,2nd,3rd & 4th Imperial Service Lancers and Imperial Service Troops. About 20 lancers and 60 syces ( 2 of whom died ) in total WO 100/296 p318

I had seen Pertab Singh's name yesterday in the ILH (16 Aug 02):

The Coronation of Their Majesties: The Indian Escort in the Procession.

The picturesque splendour of the nobility of our Oriental Empire was exemplified in the procession by Lieutenant Colonel his Highness Maharaja Sir Nripendra Narayan Bhup Bahadur, Maharaja of Cooch Behar; Major General his Highness Maharaja Sir Perab Singh, Maharaja of Idor; and Colonel his Highness Maharaja Dhiraj Sir Madho Sindhia, Maharaja of Gwalior. Besides these were the splendid horsemen of the Sovereign's escort.

In the Coronation Issue of 14 Aug 02, this picture of (from the right) Colonel his Highness Maharaja Dhiraj Sir Madho Rao Sindhai, Major General his Highness Maharaja Sir Pertab Singh and Lt Col Sir Nripendra Narayan Bhup Bahadur.

I couldn't resist adding these portraits of Indian representatives at the Coronation. From the ILN, 28 June 1902.

Thanks so much for that. Although not much new it certainly gives an ambience for the enthusiasm to be involved in the War by the Princes of India. Most grateful for these and will check them all out on my return from Maun. See also my pair to Kehr Singh Faridakot Lancers and my newly acquired bronze medal to one of the Syce in a previous post.
