An interesting thread. There are certainly a couple of Indian Mutiny Medals + QSA at the KRRC Museum and there is a group consisting of Crimea + QSA on this site too.

I hadn't really thought of later medals. I'm always impressed to see the Defence Medal after a QSA but the 1953 Coronation is yet another step!

I do have a picture of a QSA awarded to someone who served in the Americas and will look this out.

David

Hi,

WW2 Defence Medal won't be that unusual as it was awarded for, amongst other things, 1080 days service in the Home Guard which would fit the age profile of many QSA medal holders.

Steve,

The Home Guard would have been a way of serving for many Boer War veterans but you don't see too many combinations of the QSA and Defence Medal. Perhaps because the DM was not named, the medals became separated over time? I still think it impressive that a man could be awarded military medals for service over a 40 year period.

Best wishes
David

I once had an RN group QSA/trio/LSGC/Defence Medal and there was always the question of whether the DM was earned or just hung on there to make the group more saleable. Being a trusting sort of chap, I accepted the group for what it was and it was only a once-associate who brought it up. The type who sneers at "only a Cape Colony clasp" on a QSA, I do have to say.
Anyway, do you think it will ever be possible to check the the validity of the award of such as the WW2 BWM and Defence Medal when they are present with earlier medals such as the QSA, etc? I realise that a document came with the WW2 medals; however, mostly lost I would think.
I am pretty sure that some sort of checking system exists as I read of a WW2 lad who much later applied to be a Chelsea Pensioner and was told he was not entitled to the DM he wore - even though it was sent to him with the others!
Best regards
IL.

Here is a group to a man who served in three wars - Boer War, WWI (GSWA & GEA), and WWII (home service only).

Regards
Brett

PS I have another such 6-medal group to a man who started out in the Natal Police. He served in the Natal Rebellion as well, but since he was a reservist in WWII he was awarded only the Africa Service Medal for that war. I will take it out of storage and post a pic later.
