Hello John,
You may find his original attestation paper WO128 if it still exists, this will answer your question on forename.
I've looked at their particular medal roll WO100/127 before and more often that not the full name is given, but, in the case of your man it is not, which is really annoying.

Hi Mike, I am a long way from Canada but I visit there often. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas but have family in NB,and NS.

Thanks for the clarification and link!

Best,
John

Hello John,
I'm sorry, I often just assume, unwisely and perhaps unfairly, that people on here must know what I am talking about, but as Mike has given you clarification on this, the only thing I can add is welcome to this forum!
Best Regards Frank

Hi Frank, Thanks. I'm learning the lexicon, lingo, and abbrevations of this area of collecting but I'm not there yet.

Best,
John

Hello John

There is a rule when researching the IY which you won't know if you are starting out:

If a first name is not listed on the available sources, e.g. Asplin lists (noted above by Mike) or The Register (www.boerwarregister.com) then look at the British Army Service Records 1760-1915 on findmypast.co.uk.

In the very many cases I have looked at this works every time, and again in your case..........the first name is Cyril.

You can download the papers from FmP - no need for a researcher!

Regards
Meurig

Hi Meurig,

Thanks for the help! I understand now why he used only an initial :) .
